Southaven, MS (abc24.com) - The mayor of Southaven says he's humbled by the number of people who contributed to a bank account set up to help him pay back more than $170,000 in questionable expenses.

"I'm very humbled at the support as we work through this difficult time,"  said Mayor Greg Davis in a text.

The acknowledgement comes the same day the Mississippi State Auditor's Office confirmed it picked up a check for $96,000.

Mayor Davis says the $96,000 came from a fund started at Desoto County Bank in Southaven. The fund, entitled "Operation Rescue," was created to help Davis pay the State Auditor's office.

Mayor Davis missed a December 2, 2011 deadline to pay more than $170,000 in questionable expenses and fees related to the auditor's investigation into spending of city money.

"This payment is only a partial payment," said Lisa Shoemaker with the auditor's office. "The Board of Alderman are currently reviewing $44,000 in receipts submitted by Mayor Davis that could change the final amount owed by Davis."

Davis remains under criminal investigation.

Also, ABC 24, I love that you still use this hilarious photo of him for all of these stories.

Realistic, I'm sure your tax dollars paying for his wife's shrink helped to make all that happen. You may live in a good neighborhood, but that doesn't mean that this dude is a good person. You're in complete denial of the facts if you think that this buttlicker didn't abuse his position and tax dollars. Also, I absolutely refuse to believe that citizens of Southaven donated that much money to save this douchebag. I bet that if that trail of money was traced back to who donated it, a lot of new questions would arise.

He stole from the poor. His salary should of been enough. He thought that he could get away with it.

Gimme a BREAK! First of all, the total spent wsa NOT $170,000. It was about $103,000. Divide that by 3 years.....WOW. $34,333 a year in wining and dining. He can wine and dine all he wants as far as I am concerned. I am a long time Southaven resident. I have everything I need here and never have to cross the 'line'. I don't have to dodge bullets, crackheads, 7 year old potholes, panhandlers, etc... when I travel arouond town. There are no strip joints, massage parlors, prostitution. I have parks for my and my family enjoyment/recreation. I wsn't forced to choose to live in one of many trailer parks in the city nor government housing or apartment projects when I moved last year. I walk the streets of my neighborhood and feel perfectly safe because we are protected by a more than qualified police force. SHould I continue? Yes, I am glad our excellent mayor wined and dined whoever it was he wined and dined all these years. Just can't believe he only spent that small amount of money to accomplish the interest in my city that he did. For crying outloud.... whoever the politically motivated person that raised this annoyance of an issue needs to try a litle harder next time. Maybe they won't because it will incriminate them also. O!

I TOTALLY agree cop mom!! In this economy we live in, this crook got $96,000.00 donated to him?!!? Southaven has a struggling food pantry Heartland Hands that sees people and their children who are hungry, have no hope for Christmas for their children, no medical insurance etc. Senior citizens who are starving, people who are homeless and cold this winter and yet THIS MUCH MONEY WAS WASTED on a man who stole from these same people! Wasted on a man who clearly has no conscience, who was elected to a leadership position but yet stole from the people who elected him. The people who contributed to this fund instead of donating to a truly deserving cause, are now just as guilty. His bar tab alone, for liquor could have covered food, clothing, utilities and medicine for ALOT of families. Guess no body cares. They would rather ignore the "ugly" side of Southaven, ... he always did.

I am ashamed to say I am a resident of Southaven. Isn't this an example of a "mini Ponzi" scheme? It is the same as taking other people's money and spending it on yourself. I wish our wonderful mayor and his merry band of Alderman good luck in the next election. They will find out first hand what it is like to stand in the unemployment line.
