Southaven, MS (abc24.com) - The mayor of Southaven says he's humbled by the number of people who contributed to a bank account set up to help him pay back more than $170,000 in questionable expenses.
"I'm very humbled at the support as we work through this difficult time," said Mayor Greg Davis in a text.
The acknowledgement comes the same day the Mississippi State Auditor's Office confirmed it picked up a check for $96,000.
Mayor Davis says the $96,000 came from a fund started at Desoto County Bank in Southaven. The fund, entitled "Operation Rescue," was created to help Davis pay the State Auditor's office.
Mayor Davis missed a December 2, 2011 deadline to pay more than $170,000 in questionable expenses and fees related to the auditor's investigation into spending of city money.
"This payment is only a partial payment," said Lisa Shoemaker with the auditor's office. "The Board of Alderman are currently reviewing $44,000 in receipts submitted by Mayor Davis that could change the final amount owed by Davis."
Davis remains under criminal investigation.
