SOUTHAVEN, MS (abc24.com) - Slow down and pay attention. That's the message being sent to Southaven drivers who travel on one of the city's most dangerous roads.
Despite a low speed limit and plenty of warning signs, there have been multiple accidents, some fatal. The most recent accident was last Friday. A 56-year-old man died when his car went off the road and into a tree.
"It is a road where we have a lot of accidents," says Southaven Police Captain Johnny Cox. The two main reasons: speed and distracted drivers. "They need to slow down and pay attention on those curves."
Tchulahoma Road runs north and south with half a dozen hair pin turns.
"We've had two fatalities in the past three years. One this past Friday and one a couple of years ago on a motorcycle," Cox says. "We've had several other wrecks where people are just speeding and run off the side of the road."
"As long as they do the speed limit they're all right," says Danny Browning. The problem is many drivers don't.
"People do go faster than that," says Renee Fleet. Even though Fleet knows the road well, she says it can still be dangerous for those familiar with the curves.
"If you're not looking you don't know when the curves are coming. Even though I drive it a lot, I've still taken that curve too fast sometimes."
Southaven police say one accident is one too many, which is why they frequently patrol the area.
"We basically go down and run radar and try to slow people down in that area and in the rest of Southaven," Cox says.
The northern section of the road has fewer problems, that's because the city straightened it a couple of years ago.
