MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Tennessee environmental officials are heading to Memphis Monday and they might bring bad news. They will be discussing taking over the auto emissions testing.
The City of Memphis is getting out of the inspection business in June. It will probably mean everybody in Shelby County will need to get their cars inspected.
According to Harvey Kennedy, Chief Executive Officer for Shelby County, "They actually asked for this meeting here with the key players for the air quality and emissions control."
We told you over and over that the state will probably plan on doing emissions tests on all Shelby County cars, not just those in Memphis. It sure looks like that's what they're going to tell everybody on Monday.
"Well, in other counties where the state has come in to impose a program it has been imposed county-wide. It has been operated through a contractor," Kennedy stated.
It looks like everybody in Shelby County will be able to share the annual joy Memphis drivers have of lining up and waiting to see if the old chariot has another year of life.
While many drivers are disgruntled over the likelihood, others say just the thought of county-wide inspections makes them happy.
"I think that's an excellent idea," said Memphis driver Kent McAden. "They use the city streets the same way I do."
The meeting is Monday morning and some suburban mayors, such as Germantown's Sharon Goldsworthy, are expected to join in and hear what's ahead.
