MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Depending on the cup of joe you drink, car you drive, and where you like to eat, you could be a Democrat or a Republican. A new study by “Buyology Inc” surveyed more than 4,000 Americans on different brands. It concluded that the left and right disagree on the majority of 200 brands tested, which could be one reason why Congress has a hard time getting along. There were a few brands that Democrats and Republicans both enjoyed - but if only politics were that simple.
According to the study you’re considered a Democrat if you prefer a Jeep, Sony products, use Progressive insurance, watch Animal Planet, eat at Wendy’s, watch the NFL, drink Starbucks, and use a Wii.
On the other hand, you’re considered a Republican if you prefer a BMW, Sharp products, use Allstate insurance, watch the History Channel, eat at Subway, watch the MLB, drink Dunkin’ Donuts, and use XBOX.
Republicans and Democrats agree on Coca-Cola products, prefer to use Visa, use Google, Apple products, and use Olay beauty products.
Most of the brands fell in line with a person's political party affiliation, but when we tested it out in Memphis but it didn’t work for everyone. Depending on the brands, it can highlight social issues too.
“Republicans and Democrats are wired a little differently so maybe there are some correlations when it comes to things that we buy,” said the Shelby County Republicans Chairman Justin Joy. “It all comes down to, do we want more government or less government and when you're talking about Republicans we want less government."
"When you think about the social consciousness that Starbucks has it tries to pay workers fair wages, the company gives benefits to all their employees, which is really unheard of in most shops their size,” said the Shelby County Democrats Chairman Van Turner. “It's just an interesting study, it's something that I'll keep supporting Starbucks then (laughs)."
