MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A suspect has been charged with murder after a double shooting at a Whitehaven gas station Wednesday afternoon left one man dead.

Memphis police heard shots fired around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18 near the BP gas station at Winchester and Millbranch. When they pulled up to the scene, they saw a man running away with a gun. The suspect, 28-year-old Travis Tate, was captured after officers found him hiding in a Coca-Cola truck.

Investigators say Tate shot two men during a verbal altercation. An ambulance transported the two victims to The MED. One victim, 27-year-old Demarkis Smith, was pronounced dead on arrival. The second victim, a 29-year-old man, was treated and has since been released.

Travis Tate has been charged with First Degree Murder and Attempted First Degree Murder. He is being held without bond at the Shelby County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court July 26.

It's a crying shame, young people these days don't know how to deal with conflict without the use of violence!!!! When are people going to start putting more value on life more than their anger/heat of the moment?!?!
