MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis Police have arrested the man accused of claiming found money that wasn't his.
On December 30, 2011, Ruth Millican said she had just cashed her Social Security check and walked in to M & T Market on Waring to make a purchase. As walked through the front door, surveillance video showed Millican's cash fall out of her pocket onto the door mat inside.
After the cash goes unnoticed by several customers, a woman walks in and picks up the cash. The woman told police that before she could say anything, 28-year-old Courtney Tipler claimed the cash was his.
Millican stated to investigators that she saw Tipler arguing with the cashier because he didn't have enough money for his purchase. Once she got in line, Millican said Tipler came back to the counter and laid some money on the counter, telling the cashier to keep the change. Millican then realized that her money was missing from her pocket, but Tipler fled the scene.
The entire incident was caught on the store's surveillance camera.
Courtney Tipler was arrested and charged with Theft of Property $500 or less. Millican claimed that $614 was stolen; once the exact amount stolen is confirmed by investigators, Tipler's charge could be upgraded.
