MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A fleeing suspect who pointed a loaded gun at a Memphis police officer was taken down by an MPD K-9 and arrested.
An officer on routine patrol near the Mid-South Fairgrounds on Southern Avenue pulled over a silver Dodge Avenger with no tags just before 8 p.m. on April 2. As the officer approached the car, the passenger jumped out of the car and fled on foot. The officer gave chase until the suspect pulled a loaded handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officer.
Memphis police brought their K-9 Unit to the scene, and a K-9 officer captured the suspect, who was identified as 20-year-old Alex Smith.
Smith was taken to The MED in non-critical condition for a bite wound from the K-9 officer. He was later released and charged with Aggravated Assault, Evading Arrest and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.
The driver of the vehicle eluded officers and remains at large.
