MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Another dog vanishes from the Memphis Animal Shelter. Just a year ago it was a pit bill named Kapone, now it's a lab mix named Nola.

For years problems have been reported at the Memphis Animal Shelter. Now a new fancy building and a new administrator hired to crack the employees into shape wasn't enough to prevent Nola from vanishing.

Victoria Henry fights back tears talking about her missing dog.

"I don't know where Nola is, nobody knows where Nola is," she said, "She's my baby, I miss her."

Nola and Henry's other dog, Uno, were picked up by an animal control officer earlier this month when they dug out of their yard and taken to the Memphis Animal Shelter.

When Henry went to the shelter pick up both dogs, workers could only find Uno.

Records show Nola arrived at the shelter but then the trail goes cold. There is nothing showing Nola was adopted, given to a foster family or even euthanized.

"How can you not know where the dog is? I just don't understand, nobody knows."

Shelter Administrator James Rogers told ABC 24 News - off camera. Truth is a series of employee errors is to blame. A data clerk didn't put the correct information into the computer system. Even when told about the mistake, she never corrected it.

Henry says, "I'm angry but I am trying to remain calm."

Rogers says he is investigating, checking surveillance video tape, adoption, foster and euthanasia records. He also says that the employees will be disciplined.

That sounds good, but Henry says truth is, "They've been giving me the runaround. No one knows anything it the same thing, every time I go there I honestly feel they are not doing anything and not trying to investigate this."

The new shelter director admits this shouldn't have happened and promises it won't happen again.

Keep in mind this dog disappeared from the shelter three weeks ago.

Truth is by now those in charge have already gone through the records and tapes trying to figure out how yet another dog disappeared under the city's watch.

Stray animals are better off running the streets than in the death center the City of Memphis has the audacity to call an animal shelter. At least on the streets, their survival rate is higher.

Frayserboi is indictative of the types of people working at that place. No wonder it is plagued with problems. Fortunately, that type person usually ends up with erectile dysfunctions or some other impotence preventing them from procreating. Besides, disturbed unbalanced people really shouldn't be parents anyway. Isn't nature GREAT!

The problem is that people who really care about cats and dogs cannot work in a place that systematically puts animal to death just for being homeless or in need of veterinary care. It is a non-working situation from the get-go. These types of death factories naturally would only be able to employ people who do not care too much for animals. These people seem incapable to even comprehend the deep bond between humans and their pets. The way of the future is no-kill shelters. It is the only decent and humane way to deal with homeless dogs and cats. We owe these creatures more compassion than they get from Memphis and its dog and cat death factory. Calling it a "shelter" is a lie.

@ 'Bogard2': Because they would actually have to hire 'people' (Humans). Dogs are MANKIND's best friend.....

Great post, MikeP! I have sent numerous e-mails about the incorrect breed description, color (yes, have you heard of a blue chow?), and the lack of pictures posted....If you are going to do a job - don't do it halfway right - either do it right or find another job. Until MAS's house is cleaned, this will be the same old story, just a different day.

This is so disgusting! Why can't the city hire compassionate people at the shelter???? They lie so much, that they have to tell lies to cover up their previous lies. Wake up Memphis! This is the animal shelter, and if they can't get it right, then just think of the lies and corruption in the other departments of our city. So sad.

Record keeping has been a big issue at MAS for a very long time. Those photos on Pet Harbor are completely unhelpful for an owner to find their lost pet, yet Rogers continues to allow them. The Pet Harbor photos are also not maintained - animals now long dead are still posted there while animals currently at the shelter are not listed at all. ACOs scan for chips, and look at dog tags, but does anyone actually try to contact an owner? Ms. Henry's other dog was also picked up, was chipped and had been reported lost to the shelter, but MAS never contacted her about him. Why not? If reuniting a lost pet with an owner of record is not important to them, why are they still on staff? Time and past time to clean house at MAS. Get some people in there who will make an effort on behalf of the animals. And let's all pray that this poor dog (misidentified as a pit bull, as so many are because the staff at MAS are not competent at identifying breeds AT ALL) wasn't sold out the back to dog fighters like Kapone was.
