Yea, political views regarding how you abuse your body aren't really the issue here. This is just another example of out of control city officials having their way at the expense of the citizens. Having incompetent people in positions of influence is just the Memphis way.

The main thing we need to look at in this story is the fact that Steve Payton is the brother of Daryl Payton, a member of the MFD command staff. This is the one and only reason this man was able to remain on the job after not ONE not TWO but THREE failed drug test. Daryl Payton was able to make one test disappear. Typical MFD politics.

@BIGJIM - bold statement. Just because somebody knows the true affects of drugs, the stupidity of the drug war, and the reality that testing positive for a drug or its metabolites does not mean that a person is under the affects of the drug at the time of the testing, does NOT make them a drug user. BTW, you and most of the folks that comment on any story here are likely drug users - caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol. What's the difference? The government prohibits some drugs and not others. Frankly, it's nobody else's business what I put in my body if I don't harm another person. The problem is prohibition....

"but other city employees fired for drugs use, may end up getting their jobs back" And thus the MPD recruiting drive comes to and end.

You really do not understand how politics, unions and local governments work.....anyway Federal Law restricts who can see the drug results and what can be done with that information...the city must still follow Federal Law if they choose to take federal dollars....

Maybe when he goes back to work he will be protecting your neighborhood and family, not mine. If a firefighter can't control himself even after being caught once I don't want him protecting me. By the way, all firefighters are subject to random drug testing but most pass. I'm glad you support his blatant disregard for the rules and law, but I choose to believe the people protecting our lives and property should be sober.

SMOKING POT, SO WHAT, SO LONG AS HE'S NOT HIGH AT WORK,WHICH HE PROBABLY IS NOT, I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH HIM BEING REHIRED. WHAT YOU DO OUTSIDE OF WORK IS YOUR BUSINESS. SO LONG AS YOU DON'T BRING IT TO WORK. F DRUG TESTING. IF ONE HAS TO ALL SHOULD HAVE TOO.

It's no surprise to know Mr. Payton's brother is a member of the command staff for the MFD. Yet another example of high ranking city officials not taking care of business. No wonder the city is going broke...
