MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - We now know what happened to the latest dog that disappeared from the Memphis Animal Shelter. Nola is dead. Also, a manager at the shelter has been fired.
City hall confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Chelton Beamon, the shelter's Operations Manager, was fired.
For more than a month, Nola's owner has been trying to find out what happened to her dog. Now she knows.
Victoria Henry fought back tears talking about what happened to her dog in the care of Memphis Animal Services.
"That was the news I didn't want but it was the news I received, and I kinda knew it but was still keeping hope she was alive," Henry said. "I am hurt beyond measure."
Henry says city officials told her the dog was killed the day after it arrived at the shelter five weeks ago as the result of employee errors. An employee entered the wrong intake date into the computer and after the mistake was pointed out by another employee it was never corrected.
"She should be terminated. I want her to feel how I feel."
Another mistake, according to MAS Administrator James Rogers, was made by Operations Manager Chelton Beamon. He knew about the missing dog for almost two weeks before telling his boss. Henry says Beamon promised to pull surveillance tapes to track down what happened, but he never did.
Henry said, "I've been given the run around been, lied to, and I don't appreciate that."
