MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Transportation Security Administration officials have now found nine undeclared guns in passenger luggage at the Memphis airport in 2011.
TSA authorities tell abc24.com that around 7:40 p.m. on on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, they found a loaded handgun in a passenger's carry-on bag at Memphis International Airport. Airport police took the bag and charged the passenger.
TSA authorities say this was the 9th gun found at a checkpoint in Memphis so far in 2011 and more than 940 guns have been discovered at checkpoints nationwide.
“Passengers should look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items,” said Jon Allen, TSA spokesman.
Firearms may be transported in checked baggage, but must be declared to the airline, in a proper carrying case and unloaded. Guns are prohibited in carry-on bags.
