JACKSON, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - A high school senior from West Tennessee says she was turned away from her prom because of her dress, which had elements of the Confederate battle flag.

Texanna Edwards told The Jackson Sun officials of Gibson County High School told her the dress was "offensive and inappropriate" when she and her date arrived for the dance on Saturday. She was not allowed to attend.

The dress is red and has crossed blue bands that contain rows of white stars.

Gibson County Special School District Superintendent Eddie Pruett said a teacher cautioned the 18-year-old Edwards two months ago that the dress might not be acceptable.

Pruett said there have been racial issues at the school in recent years and Principal James Hughes felt the dress could have caused more.

WOW... my heart goes out to the young man that took her to the prom. Now everyone knows his date was going to wear flip flops to the prom.

This, is stupid. This girl wanted to make a point that she is a ignorant trashball, and she was a complete success at doing so.

OMG. I just noticed she was wearing flip flops. THAT should have gotten her trown out of the prom, not the dress.

First, she must not have wanted to go to the Prom, because they told her months before not to wear it. Secondly, I think if she wanted to look like "po" white trash (in her flip flops), she should have been allowed to.

If she wants to look like a "Dukes of Hazzard" fangirl and the other kids are ok with it, why not? There are all kinds of crazy outfits for prom. I wish the KKK had stuck with flying Old Glory instead of co-opting the southern battle flag. The flag of the confederate government was a boring blue flag, but Saint Andrew's Cross is a cool design.

Yes, the Confederate flag is part of American history just as the Nazi flag is part of World history. Anyone wearing a dress such as this is trying to send a message, and a negative one at that. Would everyone be "just fine" if she decided upon a nazi flag? To meme who asked if any black girls wore african dress...why even try to equate the two. African dress does not represent the cruelty that is part of the confederate flag. My lord...the South. Geez.
