MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - If it doesn't cost a life, driving drunk will cost you jail time, your driver's license, shame and guilt, and a whole lot of money.
When it comes to a DUI conviction, Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said, "The fines are pretty astronomical, anywhere from $500 up to the tens of thousands of dollars."
Not only will it cost an offender a lot of money, it will cost them jail time.
"There's very little wiggle room and that's a good thing in the law when we deal with DUI," Weirich said. A first time DUI conviction carries a penalty of no less than 48 hours and up to 1 year in jail, not to mention other potential fines and punishments for DUI offenders.
