MEMPHIS, TN - Shelby County Health officials have now linked a third person’s death to the hot temperatures. Dr. Helen Morrow, Acting Health Officer for the Shelby County Health Department, says a 62-year-old man died last month in Raleigh from medical and heat-related illnesses.
Memphis Police found the man at his home in the 3200 block of Covington Pike on June 14th. The air conditioner was off, but a ceiling fan was on.
Two other people died in Shelby County in June from heat-related illnesses. Both had other medical conditions.
A 60-year-old man died outside from hyperthermia. A few days later, a 75-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment. The apartment had a working air conditioner but it was not turned on. The windows were also closed.
The heat was also blamed for the death of a man in Tipton County, TN, in June. He died after falling out of his van. A family member discovered him in his driveway.
Health officials urge people to check on the elderly and others who live alone. People should also use caution when working outside and limit outdoor activities during the extremely hot weather.
