MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - University of Memphis football fans lit up the phone lines at Gary Parrish's radio show, eager to talk about the hiring of Justin Fuente as the next head football coach.
"What I really like about this hire is for the 1st time you can say the U of M thought out of the box," one caller said. Another caller noted, "I liked it was an 11th hour hire."
Fuente was introduced to Memphis during a news conference on the U of M campus. He told the assembled crowd of media and fans, "I've been dreaming of this moment for a long time."
35-year-old Fuente has spent the past three seasons as TCU's co-offensive coordinator.
He replaces Larry Porter, who was fired after their season-ending 44-7 to eventual Conference USA champion Southern Mississippi on Nov. 26. Porter was 3-21 in two seasons as head coach of his alma mater.
