MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) — ‘Tis the season to be vigilant. The Shelby County Sheriff's office says burglaries are usually up this time of year. In fact, investigators are looking for crooks after a rash of car break-ins in Cordova.
Residents were surprised to hear burglars are targeting their quiet neighborhood. Now, neighbors say they're going to think twice before leaving their car doors unlocked in their driveway, but it was too late for some. Fortunately, one homeowner had a surveillance camera in his driveway and it caught thieves rummaging through his car in the middle of the night. That was the first of several car break-ins in the neighborhood.
"Some of thefts included an iPhone, 3 GPS units, and a clarinet with a value of $8,000 dollars," said the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chip Washington.
Homeowners are on edge.
“Yea it's kind of upsetting because I have my grandchildren here," said a homeowner Terri Calhoun.
Shelby County deputies say crooks know people are out holiday shopping and they're just waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. Washington says you may think your car is safe parked in your driveway, but think again.
“I think the folks have to take the necessary precautions to keep things like this from happening,” said Washington.
So no matter where you are, even in your garage, authorities want you to make sure you lock everything. If you have any information about the Cordova crooks you can submit your tip on the Shelby County Sheriff's Facebook page or you can also call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
