DESOTO COUNTY, MS (abc24.com) - An overturned cattle truck on U.S. Highway 78 forced motorists in DeSoto County to find another way home during their Friday evening commute.
The truck was traveling westbound on 78 when it hit the Coldwater Bridge and flipped over into a ditch. The truck, which was carrying 105 heads of cattle, caught fire when it crashed. 40 cows were safely rescued from the truck, 45 were killed and another 20 wandered off from the scene. Ten of the loose cows were eventually rounded up as crews worked to pull the truck from the ditch.
Highway 78 was shut down between Ingrams Mill and Hacks Cross; drivers were detoured onto Highway 178. Traffic was reopened just after 6 p.m.
The driver of the truck was not injured in the crash.
