WEST MEMPHIS, AR (abc24.com)- Snowfall in the Natural State Monday did away with the unusually mild winter and had both drivers and the highway department preparing for the worst.
A taste of winter swept through Little Rock with a rare showing of snow. When we were in Crittenden County, the winter weather had yet to hit. But truckers knew it was coming if they had not driven through it already.
“We drive in snow all the time so just take it easy and watch out for everybody else,” Josh Styron said.
Everybody else means everyone but truckers. Average drivers must have a bad rep with truckers when it comes to navigating roadways during winter weather.
“They get that tunnel vision: 'I gotta go to work, I gotta go here, I gotta go there, oh I forgot something at the grocery store for dinner'. I'm a volunteer firefighter from Missouri and I know it can be bad real quick,” Jimmy Phillips said.
Even so, activity was limited at Crittenden County's Highway and Transportation Department. A spokesperson said they were waiting for the bad weather before putting down a salt and sand mix on interstates and roads
The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department says most of the roadways throughout the state were pretty clear. If any rain freezes overnight, workers will be out before dawn Tuesday to make sure the roads are safe to travel.
