MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis police have charged two men for opening fire outside Sherwood Elementary, forcing the school into a lockdown Thursday morning.

The shooting occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 7. According to investigators, Terrence Tillman, 35, approached his children's mother as she was dropping them off at the school and threatened to take them from her. As they argued he pushed her to the ground and she cut him in the arm with a knife in self defense. Tillman retrieved a gun from his car, and witnesses saw him shoot at the vehicle with the mother, their 5-year-old and 2-year-old daughters, and the mother's friend inside.

The friend, 19-year-old Harold Gales, then pulled out a gun and returned fire. Neither party nor any students were hit, although a nearby vehicle was damaged.

The school was placed on lockdown and all parties fled the scene before police arrived. Gales was located a short time later at the woman's home and taken into custody without incident. Police were notified later that evening of a stabbing victim at St. Francis Hospital, where officers identified Tillman and placed him under arrest.

Terrence Tillman was charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault - Domestic Violence, Aggravated Assault, Carrying a gun on School Property, Possession of a Handgun During the Commission of a Felony, and Reckless Endangerment. He was booked at the Shelby County Jail on a $200,000 bond.

Harold Gales was charged with Reckless Endangerment, and Carrying a Weapon on School Property. He was also booked at the Shelby County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
