MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Gun advocates want workers in Tennessee to have the right to bring guns to work. A bill is on the table in Nashville that would make it legal for workers to pack heat, as long as the gun stays inside their cars.
Governor Bill Haslam hasn't taken a stance either way but he has taken a stance when it comes to employees of colleges and universities taking guns to work - he's against it.
Tom Nenon, Interim Provost at the University of Memphis, is also against it.
"We want to keep guns off our campus," he said. "We do not believe having guns on campus for anyone but authorized law enforcement officers would serve to increase the safety of our faculty, of our students, or anyone else coming to campus."
Nenon says the university wants to keep the number of guns that are not in the hands of law enforcement officers as small as possible.
"That will help keep that number down and allow us to enforce any violation of firearms on our campus."
While he understands employees going to and from work are concerned about their safety, he doesn't understand is why someone would want to bring a gun to work whether it's locked in a car or not.
"The fact that people can bring guns and have them in close proximity would endanger the safety of many others," he said.
