MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The uncle of a 6-month-old baby girl is behind bars for shaking her to death.
On December 9, 2011, a 911 call came in concerning an unresponsive infant. 6-month-old Anaya Jones was transported to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition, and was soon placed on life support due to brain trauma. Memphis Police were notified, and investigators found that the child's uncle, 23-year-old Ronnie Wilkerson, had been caring for the baby and a three-year-old boy.
Wilkerson told investigators that he shook Jones three different times to wake her up and change her. After the third time, she began crying and then became unresponsive. According to police documents, Wilkerson said he guessed he didn't know his own strength.
Anaya Jones died as a result of her injuries on Dec. 12. The following day an autopsy report ruled her death as a homicide.
Ronnie Wilkerson was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse and first degree murder. He is being held at the Shelby County Jail without bond.
