Union President: Memphis Police Used as Pawns in Budget Battle

The head of the Memphis Police Association says cops are being used as pawns by Mayor A C Wharton. Earlier this week the mayor said he is considering layoffs that will include police and fire departments. The police union's president, Mike Williams, says if taxes are raised to avoid the layoffs people will blame cops and firefighters.

@bluthunder2k1......there is no pleasing you idiots is there? The police STOPPED writing tickets in certain areas because people were complaining that hey were being picked on! Then the same people were trashing cops for not writing tickets. WTF is someone suppose to do? and by the way, you are seeing an inrease in ticket writing on the interstate because it was DIRECT ORDERS from the mayor YOU keep electing. So would you tell your boss to f off if he told you to do something? Those officers do not want to be on that interstate, because its dangerous! Get your facts in order before you speak genius! On the subject of layoffs, I can promise you it isn't going to happen, not because the mayor won't let it, but because officers are leaving left and right due to the pay cut bs. We have lost 89 since they brought it up and I estimate we will loose another 150 within the year. That's fact! So memphis, finally rise up against the ignorant mayor and call his bluff on this, do not pay another cent that you don't have to! I promise he won't cut because he won't have to.

I agree with Jacobi131. Those cronies of Willie's AND our current person downtown needs to be the people whose jobs are CUT. I know I have harangued about this, but frankly folks, just how much should the employees have to fork over. We, (my husband is a long time employee) have already lost nearly 5% in pay, why should the employees be the ones attacked again. Most of the employees own property and pay property taxes so if you cut their pay again, increase property taxes, zap the employees with layoffs, you are giving them a triple whammy. We are living with the pay cut, but it wasn't our fault that King Willie and the nitwits on the city council bungled all that money. Just because we are employees of the city doesn't mean they should keep coming back time after time and giving us the shaft. There is money elsewhere including millions in their reserve fund or whatever it is called, much more than is legally needed. Use that to pay out of the mess the former fool that sits downtown got us into. Frankly this mayor is an idiot when it comes to finances. Why did they dole out the bonus last year? We didn't ask for it. He doesn't know how to run this city, but when it comes to voting, most of you vote color 'cause then you can be assured of great government. Well folks, it hasn't seemed to work so maybe you need to look at who you put in office not just that his skin color matches yours so he has to be good for the city because you have failed miserably twice.

Raising taxes is not the answer. Stop with the scare tactics. Like most cities with budget problems, things need to be cut. That might include fire fighters and cops.

Dont forget Mike Mathews...the Mayor already promised he would not cut PUBLIC SAFTEY...but he is a liar...the Fire Department have lost and will loose over a hundred firefighters and 10 pieces of equipment that will no longer protect this community! It may not be lay offs...but bottom line...SAFTEY IN JEPORDY!

Lay offs in the MPD and Fire Dept. seemed to be at the top of the list the last time I checked. Obviously I misread.
