MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The University of Memphis introduced Tom Bowen as its new Athletic Director. Bowen, the AD at San Jose State, will replace R.C. Johnson who steps down as Tigers Athletic Director in two months.

Bowen told the crowd assembled at the Penny Hardaway Hall of Fame on the U of M campus, "I am humbled and honored that you selected me."

He said what he wants for the U of M athletes are "a championship ring in one hand and a diploma in the other."

R.C. Johnson, who's been at the U of M for the last 16 years, told abc24.com, "I'm happy with Tom coming on board."

Search Committee member Willie Gregory, who recommended Bowen be hired, said Bowen impressed the committee with his energy and passion.

Bowen will officially become the Tiger's AD on June 18.
