JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says Mississippians won't have to show photo identification when they go to the polls Nov. 6.
Republican Hosemann has said it many times before, but he issued a statement repeating it Tuesday because his office had received questions.
Voters in November 2011 approved a state constitutional amendment that would require people to show photo identification before voting, and legislators this past spring passed a bill that would put the requirement into law.
However, because of its Jim Crow history, Mississippi must get federal approval for any changes to election laws or procedures.
The state's proposed voter ID law awaits a decision by the U.S. Justice Department.
Hosemann's office says the only ID required is for first-time voters who used mail-in registration forms.
