MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Pollen is spring’s worst allergen and it is already blanketing the Mid-South. Experts say this could be the worst year yet for allergy-sufferers.

More than 17-million people in the U.S. will make a trip to the doctor’s office this year due to allergies.

One out of every five people suffer from allergies and you could suffer longer this year. Allergy season is starting earlier and lasting longer due to warmer temperatures.

Allergist Dr. Steve Cole says, "We had a very mild winter. We didn't kill off all the plants so the trees are sprouting earlier."

The Mid-South is currently experiencing an extreme level of tree pollen and a high level of grass pollen. For allergy-sufferers, enjoying the warm weather can be hard to do.

Experts recommend avoiding the outdoors during the early morning hours. That is the time of day when plants release most of their pollen. After a heavy rain, your allergy symptoms may also improve.

Dr. Cole suggests taking your shoes and your clothes off when you come inside. This will help keep pollen from traveling into your home. Also, keep the windows closed and run the air conditioner.

We certainly can’t completely avoid allergens in the air, but allergy eye drops and anti-histamines are the best weapons against them.
