MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Election problems continue in Shelby County. Kenneth Whalum, Jr. lost out in his bid for a seat on the new Unified School Board by barely more than a hundred votes, and is calling for a recount.

Whalum is a former Memphis City School Board member. He lost to Kevin Woods by 108 votes.

They were competing to represent District Four on the Shelby County Unified School Board. Whalum is on the Unified School Board right now, but his seat will be eliminated next summer after city and county schools merge.

"There are too many mistakes, too much confluence of questionable circumstances not to at least ask for a recount. I have the constitutional right to ask for a recount, and I fully intend to do so," Whalum stated.

Whalum initially told reporters he wouldn't ask for a recount but changed his mind after speaking with his wife.

Woods told abc24.com he's not opposed to a recount. "When the dust settles we want to know without question we won the election fair and square," he said.

The Shelby County Election Commission says it doesn't have the authority to execute a recount. That decision has to be made by a judge.
