MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - White Station High School has been ordered to forfeit its upcoming Friday, August 17th football game against Ridgeway High School following an investigation into hazing among football players.

In a statement from Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash, he said all involved personnel and coaching staff have been disciplined and letters will be sent home with all White Station students. The students involved have also been disciplined per board policy.

"Let me be perfectly clear about this situation: bullying of any kind, including hazing by student athletes, will not be tolerated in the Memphis City Schools," Cash stated. "Student athletes are expected to be leaders among their peers."

Memphis City Schools issued its own statement Thursday:

”MCS received complaints that several freshmen football players at White Station High School were hazed during a football camp. MCS immediately notified the Memphis Police Department and conducted an internal investigation which revealed that hazing had occurred. As a result of the findings, the District took appropriate disciplinary action against several students and against school personnel who were responsible for ensuring the safety of the students.

Additionally, since several White Station High School football players participated in the hazing, MCS has held the entire team accountable for the misconduct by requiring the team to forfeit tomorrow's game.

MCS has zero tolerance for hazing or any conduct which puts our students at risk. The District trusts that this substantial but necessary penalty deters future acts of hazing by students and/or student athletes.”

The school district's investigation is ongoing.

Football ain't the reason government schools s*ck hind t*t....it's because of the fact that it's a virtual monopoly. There's really no incentive to improve. (Hazing in high school??? That's too weird.)

I actually have to agree with the fact that the kids DO need more intensive education (with an emphasis on math & science), but getting rid of sports is not the way to go. They might try adding courses on etiquette, manners, & how to be men.

It is time to eliminate football from our schools. The United States is a mere 17th in the world in education ranking. We are putting out airheads instead of scholars. There are more educational ways of teaching group involvement besides injury causing sports. Besides, football instigates the hideous "us against them" mentality.
