Memphis, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton wouldn't speculate Tuesday, November 29, 2011 if anyone will lose their jobs after an independent review of the Memphis Animal Shelter found scores of problems.

The Memphis Rotary Club report was made public on November 16, 2011 and at the time, the Mayor vowed to move swiftly.

Now, nearly two weeks later, the Mayor wouldn't talk specifics on what that might mean for Janet Hooks, the Director of Public Services, and the woman ultimately responsible for the shelter.

"I'm not going to touch that, in respect to any of the directors, because I'm working on that process right now." said Wharton. "I will say this without zeroing in on any particular division, there will be changes."

The mayor told abc24.com he continues to review all directors and hopes to announce changes in the next 30 days.

"If the Mayor ever wants to ya know, shut all the animal advocates up, then take action and do something, because we will all be so shocked we won't be able to speak," said Cindy Sanders, a local animal advocate.

I wonder if there is any way to hire people for the Animal Shelter that actually love animals. Makes more sense than giving the jobs to people who really don't like them. Hire someone who has 3 or 4 dogs at home they have saved because of abusive people (and there seems to be many animal abusers in this city) People who save animals themselves will make sure the animals are taken care of. Let's think before we hurt any more of these precious animals. Let's start really interviewing and checking the credentials of people the shelter hires. I am really tired of hearing about the abuse of these animals at the hands of people who grab their paychecks and go home while dogs starve to death at a SHELTER! Certainly anyone who has been found abusing animals should be fired, there should not be a question about this. There are many many people needing jobs who would have compassion for these animals, unlike the people in this article. Dog and Cat lover Memphis
