MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Doctors have proven benefits to drinking wine, but you may not know that wine can help keep you from getting sunburned. Wine comes from grapes and grapes have flavonoids, a compound found in fruits that may prevent damage to skin cells from sun exposure.

Dermatologist Dr. James Turner said, “It makes a nice story, but in truth, there's something to it. When you get too much UV exposure, it causes damage to the skin cells and it creates a lot of reactive oxygen species which will kill off skin cells.”

Flavonoids, or fruit acids, helps to fight the chemical reaction that kills skin cells and causes sun damage. Dr. Turner said theoretically, wine should be able to keep you from getting burned, but to practice common sun safety. Avoid peak heating hours of the day and always wear protective sunscreens.

Wine has also been found to fight Alzheimer’s, ward off prostate cancer and even prevent cavities.
