MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A woman who told police she left her 7 pets to starve and die was arrested 4 years after leaving the house in which she left the animals.

An affidavit says 51-year-old Deborah Yons was arrested on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, after police found six dead cats and a dead dog throughout a house in the 3800 block of S. Goodman Circle. Police went to that house after neighbors called to complain about a strange odor coming from the house.

When Yons arrived at the house, she told police it was hers and that the dead animals inside belonged to her. She said she left the house in 2007 and allowed the animals to remain there. She told police that she couldn't take care of the animals anymore because she had a lot of things going on in her life so she left them in the house to starve and die.

Yons did tell authorities she had been to check on the animals 3 weeks before being arrested.

Yons was arrested and charged with 7 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

The fact that she was arrested seems to imply that the police feel this crime is still prosecutable after several years, or they would not have arrested her.

A lot of this story makes no sense. She left the animals 4 yrs ago, but came back 3 wks ago to check on them? With no food & no water, these animals all died in 2007, so why did she come back 3 weeks ago? To view the remains of the dead animals? That's as sick as leaving them there to start with. I agree with nuttysquirrel, we need to know the statute of limitations. Hopefully it can be prosecuted according to when the crime was DISCOVERED, not when it occurred, since nobody really knows when she left there. We can only go by what she says, and her word is mud.

NikM755.... are you kidding me, just animals? They feel pain, they suffer, they bleed, the have emotions just like us!!!! Sickofcrime..... I want to hit them all, but we can't. Everyone needs to be watchful for animal abuse/cruelty and report it everyday the your proper authorities... don't call just once, report it everyday until the situation is remedied. You do so and you don't have to give your name. johncray...... you are so right, many criminals start with animal abuse.

How long is the statute of limitations for something like this?

Maybe someone will not have time to bring food or water to her jail cell. And for those of you who say they are just animals: Jeffrey Dahmer started out by abusing animals...

NikM - God forbid you do any thing wrong because I will just say, "Well you are just human and you deserve to die just as the next human...." Animals are more than just animals. They provide UNCONDITIONAL love and joy even if people such as yourself see them as "just animals." Unlike humans, animals don't mistreat people. Animals have feelings just like you and I do. If people aren't going to take responsibility, then why friggin bother at all having animals? This individual deserves what she gets.

There just animals. She needs to be fined $5,000 per animal. And let go.
