MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Two Memphis City Council members are claiming that they are being disrespected because they are women.
Wanda Halbert and Janis Fullilove, the only two women on the 13-member council, have each complained in writing to city officials about what they say is mistreatment because they are women, The Commercial Appeal reports.
In a letter to council attorney Allan Wade, Fullilove said she felt disrespected by language Wade used in an opinion she had requested from him about bicycle lanes on a Memphis street.
Halbert joined Fullilove's complaint of gender bias in an e-mail, saying she had been insulted previously by chairman Myron Lowery.
Wade said that if any woman feels their rights have been infringed upon, she should notify the proper parties.
