MARTIN, Tenn. (AP) - The University of Tennessee at Martin has won a $270,000 grant for its Personal Safety Empowerment Project.

According to the school, the project aims to prevent sexual assault, especially through the creation of a bystander intervention program.

Margaret Toston, UT Martin vice chancellor for student affairs, said bystander intervention involves teaching students to respond to questionable situations.

The three-year grant is from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women

It is one of several grants nationwide distributed through the Reduce Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence and Stalking on Campus Program.
