New State Birthday Requirements for Starting Pre-K, Kindergarten

MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The State of Tennessee has new birthday requirements for Pre-K and kindergarten enrollment for the 2013-14 school year.

For children entering public kindergarten programs:

Children entering Kindergarten must be five (5) years of age on or before August 31, 2013 for the 2013-14 school year, and on or before August 15 for all school years thereafter. (The August 31 birth date requirement replaces the former September 30 birth date requirement.)

At the request of the parent or legal guardian, if the director of schools finds through evaluation and testing that a child who is five (5) years of age on or before September 30 is sufficiently mature both emotionally and academically, then the child may be permitted to enter Kindergarten.

For children entering public pre-kindergarten programs:

Children entering Pre-Kindergarten must be four (4) years of age on or before August 31, 2013 for the 2013-14 school year, and on or before August 15 for all school years thereafter. (The August 31 birth date requirement replaces the former September 30 birth date requirement.)

NOTE: Children who attended specific Pre-K programs in 2012-13 or who will attend specific Pre-K programs in 2013-14 may enter Kindergarten in 2013-14 or 2014-15.

Students enrolled in a Pre-K program operated by a local education agency (LEA), Head Start program or a state accredited non-public school Pre-K program in 2012-13 who turn five (5) years of age after August 31, 2014, will be grandfathered into Kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year. State accredited non-public Pre-K classrooms are identified as Category 1, 2 or 3 programs (a definition of these categories is available at: http://tn.gov/education/nonpublic/categories.shtml).

The ingredients for the ultimate performance-car fan experience are combined to perfection every first week of June as the legendary Hot Rod Power Tour makes its seven-cities-in-seven-days journey.

For 2013, Chevrolet Performance Presents the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour Driven by Continental Tire is set to kickoff June 1^st in Arlington, Texas and makes a stop in 5 other car crazy towns before it comes to a close in N. Concord (Charlotte), North Carolina on Friday, June 7^th. The tour brings to life the pages of Hot Rod, and embodies all that the magazine has stood for in its 65-year history. Over 5,400 enthusiasts will participate in the trip driving their beloved hot rods, street rods, custom trucks, muscle cars, and street machines of every make, model and vintage. Memphis International Raceway in Millington, TN will host Day 4 of the Hot Rod Power Tour's 7-day, 7-city adventure, Tuesday, June 4th from Noon – 6pm. The track hosted a Power Tour once before as the Power Tour traveled its annual 7-day trek cross-country in 2007. “We are excited to welcome the HotRod Power Tour back to Memphis International Raceway. Shelby County Mosquito Spray Schedule for Week of May 20

MEMPHIS, TN – The Shelby County Health Department (SCDH) has received confirmation of mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus (WNV) within the areas of ZIP code 38115. Mosquitoes carrying WNV have been previously found in ZIP codes 38018, 38104, 38109, 38116, 38122, 38127, 38133, 38125, 38017, and 38141.

Since April, the SCHD Vector Control Program has treated areas by applying larvicides to standing bodies of water, actions consistent with its efforts to be proactive in decreasing the adult mosquito population. Larviciding is the practice of applying an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insecticide to areas where mosquito breeding has been confirmed and is the most effective way of eliminating mosquito populations.

As an additional precaution, the SCHD will also conduct truck-mounted spraying (adulticiding) of EPA-approved insecticides, weather permitting, in portions specific ZIP codes according to the following schedule:

Beale Street Caravan Hosts Annual Blowout June 13

(MEMPHIS, TN) – When Beale Street Caravan throws a party, there are a few things you can count on: good food, good drink, good blues. The internationally syndicated radio show will host its annual Blowout at A. Schwab’s on Beale Street from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 13.

This year’s party will feature live music by Reba Russell and catering by Mac Edwards (Elegant Farmer).

“With music by the Reba Russell Trio, a silent auction of cool items, great food and lots of great hosts who love what Beale Street Caravan does for our city, this year's Blowout! is sure to be the best yet,” says Cynthia Ham, BSC board chair. “Although our hearts are heavy that our beloved executive producer, Sid Selvidge, won't be there, he would be thrilled with the great turnout this year in his honor.”

Selvidge recently passed away after a battle with cancer. He was a co-founder of Beale Street Caravan, and it is thanks to his tireless efforts that the show is now the most widely distributed radio program featuring Memphis music and its derivative forms, exporting Memphis culture to 2.4 million listeners and more than 400 radio stations each week.

Jack White's Third Man Records To Sell Sun Vinyl Reissues At Sun Studio

Memphis,TN-Third Man Records will park their Rolling Record Store in front of Sun Studio on Tuesday May 28th, 2013 from 12pm-7pm to sell a very special series of limited edition Sun vinyl.

Tennessee’s own, Third Man Records, has reissued three records originally recorded at The Legendary Sun Studio. On May 28th fans will gather outside Sun Studio, at 706 Union avenue, to buy these three records and also have the first opportunity to buy the limited edition release of Johnny Cash’s “I Walk The Line/Get Rhythm”. The limited edition will feature a special yellow and black splatter patterned vinyl. There will only be 100 copies of this limited edition record available at this event, however more copies of the regular pressing on black vinyl will be available that day. The other two regular pressing releases that will be for sale out of the Rolling Record Store are: Rufus Thomas “Bear Cat”/Walking In The Rain” and The Prisonaires “Baby Please”/”Just Walking In The Rain”.

In addition to the Sun reissues, the Third Man Rolling Record Store will also be selling items that they normally keep stocked in the truck.
